Twenty licensed homes, and not one of them is big

East Anaheim is the only substantial part of this city with no large assisted living community at all. The state licenses 20 care homes here, with 119 beds between them, and every single one is a six-bed house. If your picture of senior living is a lobby and a dining room, that picture does not exist in this ZIP code.

Why this corner of the city looks like this

East Anaheim is post-war single-storey tract housing, which is almost the ideal building for a six-bed care home: one floor, a flat approach, bedrooms that can take two residents, a back garden somebody can walk into. It is a poor fit for a hundred-bed community, which needs land, parking and a zoning argument.

So the market here sorted itself. Twenty small houses, spread across ordinary streets, none of them advertising, almost none of them findable online. It is the clearest example in Anaheim of the thing this whole website exists to point at.

What that means if you are looking here

It means the search is genuinely hard without help, and it means you should be honest early about whether a small home suits the person. Somebody who wants company, a schedule and other people to talk to will be lonely in a house with five frailer housemates, however good the care is.

If that is your father, the realistic options are West Anaheim or the larger communities elsewhere in the city, which are a ten to fifteen minute drive rather than around the corner. That is a real trade, and it is worth making deliberately rather than by default.

Common questions

East Anaheim, answered

Are there assisted living communities in East Anaheim?
No. ZIP 92806 is the only substantial part of Anaheim with no licensed facility larger than six beds at all. Every one of its 20 licensed homes is a small board and care home in a house.
How many care homes are in 92806?
The state register lists 20 licensed residential care facilities, with 119 licensed beds between them. It has the third highest number of homes in the city and almost the lowest bed count, because every one of them is small.
Is a small home as good as a large community?
For some people it is better, and for others it is wrong. Small homes suit somebody who needs a lot of hands-on help and little social programming. They suit a sociable, independent person much less well. Which matters more depends entirely on the person.
