Assisted living and care homes in Fullerton

Fullerton is the opposite of its neighbours. It licenses only 43 care homes but 2,164 beds — nearly as many as Anaheim, from a quarter as many buildings. If your family wants a large community rather than a house, this is where they are.

Where the big buildings are

Twelve of Fullerton's 43 licensed homes have more than six beds, and several are very large indeed. One continuing care retirement community alone is licensed for over seven hundred. Another four sit between 144 and 210. Nowhere else within a short drive of Anaheim has anything like that concentration.

That matters because the large end of the market is a genuinely different product. A building of two hundred has a dining room, a programme, tiers of staff and usually a nurse on site during the day. For a sociable parent who is still themselves, that is frequently the happier answer, and in this part of the county Fullerton is where the real choice is.

The trade you are making

Larger communities almost always quote a base rent and assess a care level on top, which means the figure you are shown on a tour is the lowest figure you will ever see. Several of Fullerton's communities were also licensed only in the last two or three years, so there is little inspection history to read on them yet.

Neither is a reason to avoid them. Both are reasons to ask harder questions, and we have a list of what to ask before anyone signs an admission agreement.

And the thirty-one houses

It is worth saying that Fullerton still has 31 six-bed board and care homes, which is more than most cities its size. If the need is hands-on help rather than company, those remain the better answer here as everywhere.

Common questions

Care in Fullerton, answered

How many assisted living communities are in Fullerton?
Twelve of Fullerton's 43 licensed residential care facilities have more than six beds. Between them the city holds 2,164 licensed beds, the most of any city neighbouring Anaheim.
Why does Fullerton have so many large senior communities?
Largely history and land. Several were established decades ago on sites big enough to support a campus, including one continuing care retirement community licensed since 1993 for more than seven hundred beds.
Is assisted living more expensive in Fullerton?
There is no published city-level cost figure for Fullerton or for anywhere in Orange County. The survey everyone quotes groups the whole of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Anaheim into one region. What is true is that larger communities price differently from six-bed homes: a base rent plus assessed care levels, rather than one all-in monthly rate.

Families rarely care about city limits. They care about the drive on a Sunday, which usually means looking two or three towns wide.
